A notícia das Aparições chegou aos ouvidos da autoridade civil e as crianças foram presas pelo administrador regional. Isto aconteceu no contexto do afastamento da Igreja Católica pelas autoridades civis e seguiu ao enorme esforço por parte das autoridades da Igreja em negar a história das crianças. As crianças chegaram mesmo a ser ameaçadas de serem queimadas em óleo caso não desdissessem toda a história. Eles recusaram, dispostos a sofrer o dito castigo. As crianças foram libertas após o dia 13 de Agosto e no dia 19 de Agosto, viram mais uma vez a Senhora num local chamado “Valinhos”. Nessa altura, Nossa Senhora prometeu fazer um milagre no último mês, para todos acreditarem. Ela disse às crianças para utilizarem o dinheiro deixado pelas pessoas na “Cova da Iria” para construir uma capela. Eles também foram instruídos para continuarem a rezar o terço para a conversão dos pecadores com as seguintes palavras: “Rezai, rezai muito e fazei sacrifícios por os pecadores, que vão muitas almas para o inferno por não haver quem se sacrifique e peça por elas”.

The news of the Apparitions reached the ears of the civil authority and the children were arrested by the regional administrator. This happened in the context of the removal of the Catholic Church by the civil authorities and followed the enormous effort on the part of the Church authorities to deny the children's story. The children were even threatened with being burned in oil if they did not disregard the whole story. They refused, willing to suffer the said punishment. The children were released after the 13th of August and on the 19th of August, they saw the Lady again in a place called “Valinhos”. At that time, Our Lady promised to perform a miracle in the last month, for everyone to believe. She told the children to use the money left by people in “Cova da Iria” to build a chapel. They were also instructed to continue to pray the rosary for the conversion of sinners with the following words: "Pray, pray a lot and make sacrifices for sinners, who go to hell for many souls because there is no one to sacrifice and ask for them" .
