A história é contada através de uma conversa entre Paula e Jéssica - mãe e filha. Paula começa a trabalhar como doméstica na casa de famílias ricas brasileiras na idade de 8 anos. Ela não recebia salário, trabalhava em troca de abrigo, assim como fez sua avó, sua mãe, e tias. Quando a filha Jessica nasce, Paula tenta romper com esse ciclo de escravização pelo trabalho doméstico tão comum no Brasil, imigrando para os Estados Unidos. Ela só queria ter uma casa para sonhar com dignidade. Será que ela conseguiu?
